Speech Therapy is a specialized treatment that assesses and corrects speech, language, and communication disorders. It is highly effective in helping children who struggle to talk, improve their ability to communicate effectively, provide targeted exercises and strategies to improve articulation, vocabulary, and sentence building. It is handled by licensed specialist called Speech-Language Pathologists (SLPs), often just called speech therapists. Despite the name, it is not just about physical act of talking; it’s about tackling everything from forming words and understanding language to social communication and even physical swallowing mechanisms. Speech therapy is an effective way to improve language and communication skills.
Who Need Speech Therapy?
People of all age groups can opt for speech therapy to improve their speech or language skills. There’s no age bar that is considered ideal to get help. Both paediatric speech therapy and adult speech therapy can help alleviate communication disorder. However, studies show kids who opt for speech therapy are most likely to succeed if they start early and also practice at home. Those who need speech therapy usually fall into two main categories
- Developmental challenges (issues children are born with or develop in childhood)
- Acquired conditions (things that happen to kids/adults due to an injury or illness)
1. Children
Kids need help of a speech therapist if they experience:
- Speech Sound Disorders: Have trouble saying specific letters, syllables, sounds correctly (e.g., saying "wabbit" instead of "rabbit") or a noticeable lisp.
- Language Delays: Have hard time understanding what others say (receptive language) or struggle to share their own thoughts (expressive language). Are non-verbal or have very limited speech.
- Stuttering: Experience disruptions in the flow of speech, like repeating sounds or getting stuck on words or lack fluency.
- Social Communication Difficulties: Seen commonly in autistic children, this involves trouble understanding social cues, taking turns in conversation, or adjusting language to fit the situation.
2. Adults
Adults require help of speech therapist due to medical conditions, such as: -
- Stroke or Brain Injury: It can cause aphasia (trouble finding or understanding words) or dysarthria (slurred, weak speech due to muscle weakness).
- Neurological Conditions: Suffer from progressive diseases like Parkinson's, ALS, or dementia that gradually affect speech clarity and vocal volume.
- Voice Disorders: Experience changes in the voice due to vocal cord nodules, cancer, or chronic strain (frequently seen in teachers or singers).
How It Helps
Speech therapy is highly customized. A speech therapist evaluates an individual's specific challenges and designs target exercises to strengthen muscles or rewire cognitive paths. SLPs/therapists use books, pictures, and interactive plays as part of process. They model correct vocabulary and grammar while encouraging repetition to build natural language skills. The SLP shows the child fun facial and mouth exercises that are used to strengthen the muscles used for speaking with fluency. Following are the focus areas under speech therapy:
| Focus Areas | What the Therapy Involves |
|---|---|
| Articulation & Clarity | Practicing the physical placement of the tongue, teeth, and lips to correct specific sounds. |
| Language & Vocabulary | Using games, flashcards, or conversational exercises to build vocabulary, construct clear sentences, and improve comprehension. |
| Cognitive Retraining | Focusing on memory, problem-solving, and organization to help organize thoughts before speaking. |
| Swallowing Therapy (Dysphagia) | Teaching specific head positioning, dietary modifications, and throat muscle exercises to help people swallow solid food and liquids safely. |
| Alternative Communication | Training to use text-to-speech apps, picture boards, or specialized devices; if verbal speech is not fully functional. |
